Feelings Identification Wheel

 Feelings Wheel

Hello, Smart ALEC Friends and Happy Freebie Friday!

We hope that you enjoyed our May theme of Executive Functioning and have found the resources to be helpful! This week we are finishing our Executive Functioning theme with our Feelings Identification Wheel.

What is it?

This wheel is broken down into four colors to help students identify the different Zones of Regulation. Each color has four emotions or feelings within it. The arrow spins allowing children to find whatever emotion they are feeling on the wheel and understand what zone they are in, helping them learn to regulate their emotions. Each feeling also has a matching face for students who are learning or struggle to communicate what they are feeling.

How do I use it?

Depending on how old your child is, he or she may need varying levels of support.  Help your child learn to identify and express their feelings by using the wheel.  If you see that your child is calm, set the arrow to calm and talk about it. If they are frustrated, set the arrow there and discuss it as well.

Use the colors as a guide too.  If your child is in the "red zone" (this includes feelings of anger and frustration) talk to them about why it is important they stop and what are appropriate strategies to help them get back on track. If they are in the green zone (happy, calm, excited) talk about why this is good and how they know they are there.

For younger kids or children who struggle to communicate their feelings, helping them learn what each emotion feels like physically so they can easier identify what they are feeling is critical. From there, you can help them find patterns as to when certain emotions arise and productive ways to deal with them.

My child needs this.  How can I get one?
